Summary: This research consists of the systematic study of six feature films directed by Sofia Coppola: The virgin suicides (1999), Lost in translation (2003), Maria Antoniette (2006), SomeWHERE (2010), The Bling Ring (2013) and The Beguiled (2017). The research presents the concept of loneliness, in terms of its complexity, as a human phenomenon; melancholic solitude as a common feature of the characters in the analyzed works, as well as the everyday life so striking in the films; contemplates the nuances of solitude in the director´s work; contextualizes the role played by women in cinema; and analyzes the structures of image and sound as a whole, from the selection of specific scenes that are emblematic for the analysis of the correlation between cinema and melancholic solitude in the filmmaker´s work.
Keywords: Sofia Coppola; solitude; everyday life; contemporary cinema.
