Post-Doctorate - general information

Overview

The Postdoctoral Program consists of a research residency offered by the Graduate Programs of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) to holders of a doctoral degree recognized in Brazil. The duration of the postdoctoral stay must be at least three (3) months and may not exceed five (5) years.

Objectives of the Postdoctoral Program

I. Promote high-level academic research;

II. Conduct relevant and innovative research;

III. Provide professional development for Brazilian and international PhDs through their integration into scientific research and/or technological innovation groups;

IV. Expand academic and scientific cooperation among faculty and researchers from different institutions.

Application Process

Requests for a Postdoctoral Research Stay must be submitted directly to the coordination of the relevant Graduate Program at UFES and must include the following:

I. A letter addressed to the Graduate Program Coordinator, formally requesting acceptance into the Postdoctoral Program, along with the application form;

II. A work plan detailing the scientific research and/or technological innovation activities to be developed during the postdoctoral period, with the possibility of including outreach and teaching activities in both undergraduate and graduate levels (as per Annex I of CEPE Resolution 18/2021);

III. A letter of acceptance from a permanent faculty member of the graduate program agreeing to supervise the proposed work plan (Annex II of CEPE Resolution 18/2021);

IV. A declaration recognizing UFES’s rights to any intellectual property resulting from the research activities, in accordance with Annex III of CEPE Resolution 18/2021;

V. An up-to-date CV registered on the CNPq Lattes Platform (for both the candidate and the supervisor).

International researchers (candidates or supervisors) may use alternative curriculum formats.

Requirements for Postdoctoral Supervisors

The supervisor must:

I. Be a permanent faculty member of the graduate program;

II. Have completed at least two (2) master’s or one (1) doctoral supervision(s);

III. Work in a field of knowledge compatible with the proposed work plan;

IV. Demonstrate quality and consistency in scientific output;

V. Provide the necessary resources to support the postdoctoral researcher’s work plan;

VI. Ensure the proper execution of the proposed work plan.

Mandatory Postdoctoral Activities

I. Fulfill the approved work plan;

II. Submit progress and final activity reports, when applicable;

III. Present the research in a public seminar;

IV. Submit at least one qualified scientific, artistic, or technical-technological product relevant to the field, in co-authorship with the supervisor.

Exemption from item IV is allowed when the research results are entirely subject to intellectual property protection, as stated in the sole paragraph of Article 11 of CEPE Resolution 18/2021.

Approval and Registration

The work plan must be reviewed and approved by the Graduate Program’s Academic Board together with the designated supervisor. Approved applications must be forwarded to the UFES Office of Research and Graduate Studies (PRPPG) for official registration and monitoring.

Conditions for Participation

The postdoctoral candidate must meet one of the following conditions:

I. Have no employment relationship and hold a fellowship from a funding agency, foundation, company, or other supporting institution;

II. Have an employment relationship with another institution, with formal authorization from their employer, regardless of additional fellowship funding;

III. Be employed at UFES, provided that:

a. They are officially on leave for this purpose;

b. The postdoctoral research is carried out in a graduate program with which they are not affiliated;

c. The candidate and supervisor are not assigned to the same academic department;

IV. Have no employment relationship and work as a volunteer, provided they sign the university’s official volunteer service agreement.

The chosen status must be indicated in the application letter submitted to the Graduate Program.

In cases of fellowship funding, a formal declaration must be provided by the funding agency specifying the type, value, and duration of the fellowship.

Candidates under item II must also provide an authorization letter from their employer specifying the allowed time commitment.

Postdoctoral positions under conditions I and IV must be full-time. Positions under conditions II and III may be part-time, following a minimum time commitment defined by the graduate program and recorded in the program’s official approval minutes.
