Guidelines for Qualifying Exam

As a general rule, Master's students have one year (12 months) from enrollment to complete their qualification exam. For Doctoral students, the period is two years (24 months).

REQUIREMENTS TO REQUEST/SCHEDULE THE QUALIFICATION EXAM

(According to the PósCom Internal Regulations, Articles 45 to 50):

Fill out the qualification committee form available on the website and attach the PDF of the dissertation produced so far.

The prerequisite for requesting the qualification exam is that the student must have completed almost all required and elective course credits for the program, with only one course potentially still pending.

The qualification exam must be requested by the student, with the approval of their advisor, by submitting the documentation required by the PósCom-Ufes Coordination.

EXAMINING COMMITTEE

(According to the PósCom Internal Regulations, Articles 62 to 64):

The minimum composition for a Master’s examination committee is three PhD members, including the advisor;

A co-advisor, if applicable, does not count toward the minimum number of committee members;

The advisor is a member and the chair of the committee;

The other committee members must hold a PhD and should preferably be affiliated with a graduate program or research institute, or hold an equivalent qualification if affiliated with foreign institutions;

At least one of the minimum committee members must be external to the program and to Ufes;

If both the advisor and co-advisor are present on the committee, only one vote will be counted;

Qualification and defense sessions may be held remotely, in a hybrid format, or in person, and can take place on any working day of the week (consult your advisor);

Additional PhD members may be included beyond the minimum, provided the total number of members is odd (advisor included, co-advisor not included);

It is prohibited for the following individuals to serve on the committee: spouse, partner, relatives by blood, affinity, or adoption up to the third degree, whether of the student or of any committee member.

After the qualification exam, the advisor must send the signed approval minutes to the PósCom office email. All committee members must sign the document. External members may use any certified digital signature tool, such as those from their home institutions or the Gov.br portal.
